The Legendary M&E Express

Rock 'N Roll Express | Illegal Foreign Object

My parents always made a big deal out of Christmas when my sister and I were kids. Even after their divorce, they both continued to do things up right for the holiday season. Actually, at least in the gift area, things got even better after their separation, especially on my dad’s side of things. With him working all the time, running several different businesses, and chasing skirts, the old man didn’t have just a whole lot of time for the kiddos when we were young. Thus, Christmas became a sort of ‘make up’ for rest of the year, and I was only too happy to take advantage. Was that sorry of me? Yeah, I guess it was looking back on it now, but no sorrier than the old man nailing his secretary while still married to my mom, right? Right.

The Art of Slowing Down

Steve Corino | Illegal Foreign Object

I watch a ton of old wrestling shows. From WCCW to AWA, Portland to Florida, Mexico to Canada, if it exists, I’ve likely got it. My wife thinks it’s silly to have so much of this stuff, and she’s probably right. At 34 years old, I could push play right now, roll endlessly and probably still twist off this mortal coil long before the videos stopped playing. What can I say, it’s a sickness. At least it’s not heroin, right? One of the things I enjoy most about watching old school wrestling shows is taking a look back to when the wrestlers worked the fans, not the other way around. Of course, nothing is black and white. There were tons of bad workers back in the day, and plenty of great workers around now, but I’d say the percentages are far different now as opposed to then. For example, whatever happened to eye contact with the crowd? I think part of the problem is things have gotten so fast in the ring, fans don’t have time to process what they’re seeing.

Kerry Von Erich: A True Lone Star

Kerry Von Erich | Illegal Foreign Object

Been thinking a lot about Kerry Von Erich lately, and I’m not really even sure why. I was out for a walk a few mornings ago, had my ipod going on something I don’t even remember, and just like that, Kerry Von Erich was rolling around in my head. He actually came to my school when I was in 3rd grade. Don’t recall the circumstances, but WCCW put on a show in our gym in East Texas and after seeing the show so many times on TV, getting to watch ‘em from those uncomfortable wooden gym bleachers was amazing. Kerry wrestled One Man Gang that night, and as I recall, he won. Remember when that sort of thing mattered in pro wrestling: winning? Now it seems you can have a champion go months and never win a match. Story lines may well have gotten a bit more intricate as the years have gone on, but I’d hard pressed to say that makes ‘em any better. I get it’s no longer ‘wrestling’, it’s ‘sports entertainment’, fine.

Bobby Roode is the answer for TNA, but is TNA the answer for Bobby Roode?

Bobby Roode | Illegal Foreign Object

For the last several years, I’ve watched TNA tread water, never really losing any of their audience, but at the same time, never really acquiring much larger of a following. I know many of the ‘smart mark’ types don’t even watch their programming due in large part to their disdain for the Russo-Bischoff-Hogan troika. That’s their choice, and good on ‘em for it, but by doing so they regularly miss out on some quality work from several wrestlers, particularly current TNA Heavyweight Champion Bobby Roode.
